A generous community

18 Aug, 2008 10:44 AM
THE Crisis Accommodation Centre and Margaret House committees gathered with members of the community on Wednesday to thank them for their wonderful support.

Just 12 months ago Crisis Accommodation employees Kim Bruce and Gwen Gunning were desperate to find somewhere to relocate the vital refuge home for women.

Now, a little over a year later, thanks to the immense generosity of the Young community, women are comfortably making use of the new house, and the office will soon also be relocated.

“We are so grateful to all those who donated funds and time towards the project,” Ms Gunning said.

“The amount given has been exceptional, it’s all come together perfectly like it was meant to be. We have a truly wonderful community here in Young.”

One of the major donors was Gordon Garling Moffitt, who provided the team with lots of time and funds, waving fees for legal contracts and tax and ensuring everything with the purchase of the house went smoothly.

“We chose to assist this cause because we believe one of the major priorities for regional communities is having the facilities for crisis accommodation,” Gordon Garling Moffitt’s Eris Gleeson said.

Other donors include the Young Shire Council, who made a significant initial donation and a loan, Delta First National and two individual women who showed incredible generosity.

The new home has been named Margaret House, after Margaret Brown, whose significant donation allowed the project to go ahead.

Tilla Davidson accepted a thank you certificate on Wednesday, on behalf of a charity organisation which calls itself The Group. The Group have been operating for several years, and over the years raised funds for several charities including Bellhaven School.

The Group no longer operates, but when Tilla heard the need for funds for the Crisis Centre she donated funds that were left over from past projects.

State member for Burrinjuck Katrina Hodgkinson attended the morning tea and said that in her time as a politician, seeing the community of Young pull together and achieve this feat is one of the most rewarding things she has been involved with.

“The new accommodation centre in the heart of Young is a culmination of hard work by Kim Bruce and a group of dedicated supporters,” she said.

“The funds from the local community proves that the people of Young care for those in need, those who are vulnerable due to situations which are not necessarily of their own making, in which those vulnerable women and children need to find emergency accommodation.”

An additional $30,000 still needs to be raised for a laundry to be built and Ms Hodgkinson has made a personal plea to the premier for funding, and is waiting on a reply.
