Awards for Grove Estate

15 Mar, 2010 10:06 AM
The Hilltops’ reputation for producing high quality, cool-climate red wines was again on show last week with news that Grove Estate vineyard in Young is the recipient of three major wine awards in Australia.

At the 2010 Sydney International Wine Competition, Grove Estate’s 2008 ‘Cellar Block’ Shiraz Viognier was awarded the Fildes Labels Perpetual Trophy for ‘Best Lighter Bodied Dry Red Table Wine of Competition’.

Along with the Shiraz Viognier and attesting to its fast growing reputation as a superb alternative red wine, Grove Estate’s 2007 ‘Sommita’ Nebbiolo was awarded the Ted Radke Perpetual Trophy for ‘Best Table Wine made from a Lesser Recognised Grape Variety’.

The 2008 ‘Cellar Block’ Shiraz Viognier is an outstanding partnership between winemaker Tim Kirk and viticulturalist Brian Mullany.

Awards at the Sydney International Wine Competition are some of the most prestigious in Australia, and Grove Estate’s performance this year builds on its reputation as a producer of superb boutique red wines, following its success at the 2006 Sydney International Wine Competition, when two trophies were awarded to the 2004 ‘Cellar Block’ Shiraz Viognier for ‘Best Red Wine’ and ‘Best Medium Bodied Red Wine’.

Last week has also seen Grove Estate’s 2007 ‘Sommita’ Nebbiolo awarded a gold medal at the Sydney Royal Wine Show 2010, for Class 26: ‘Dry red wine other than Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz’.

The 2007 ‘Sommita’ Nebbiolo is a multi-award winning wine that has previously won gold at the 2009 Winewise Small Vignerons Awards, silver at the 2008 Alternative Varietals Wine Show and Bronze at the 2008 Murrumbateman Cool Climate Wine Show.

This is another great example of winemaking excellence between winemaker Richard Parker and viticulturalist Brian Mullany.

Nebbiolo is a classic Italian variety that flourishes in the cool, inland Hilltops region. At an elevation of around 550 metres, Grove Estate enjoys an environment where the days are warm enough, with cool evenings for gradual flavour development and aromatic complexity.

Grove Estate has enjoyed consistent recognition as an award winning red wine producer.

The Grove Estate 2006 ‘Cellar Block’ Shiraz Viognier Reserve won a highly coveted gold medal at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards in London in 2008 and the same wine also won the top gold in its class at the 2007 Royal Adelaide Wine Show, along with silver medals at the 2007 Winewise Small Vignerons Awards and the 2007 Boutique Wine Awards.

The Flanders, Kirkwood and Mullany families established the Grove Estate vineyard in the red volcanic soils in the Hilltops wine region around Young in New South Wales in 1989.

Grove Estate produces wines under their own label as well as supplying grapes to some of the country’s top winemakers.
