In the state’s second longest running horse camp, the atmosphere is all abuzz and memories are being made to take away for a lifetime.
This year there are 183 children involved from near and far, including the Western Districts, Snowy Mountains, South Coast, Central West and Sydney.
Young Pony Club treasurer and coordinator Kathy West, says this year they’re trialing a new program for riders and horses.
“We’ve got special instructors at each activity, which includes new activities such as harness driving, tent pegging and troop drilling - which is riding in formation to music,” she says.
“It seems to be working, we’ve got a lot of positive feedback.”
The Pony Club’s senior instructor Cheryl Matthews, who has been working at the club for 24 years and first attended the camp as a girl, says this year all the children have so far been very polite and cooperative.
“I almost got 100 per cent pleases and thank-yous on something I was doing yesterday,” she said.
Cheryl said the best part for her about the camp is the social aspect and the amount the children learn that they wouldn’t normally be exposed to.
A usually damp and cold week for all - and despite a questionable start on Monday - the weather has been on the side of the young riders so far.
