Candidates slow to step up

11 Jul, 2008 01:11 PM
CONTENDERS for the September 13 local government elections, apart from existing councillors, are shaping up be an elusive bunch with only one person confirming a definite plan to nominate, some early contenders ruling themselves out and a few still undecided.

Young residents will be required to vote nine councillors to represent them on the Young Shire Council and already there are three clear vacancies with Mayor Gerry Bailey, state government politician Mick Veitch and health educator Anthony King not standing.

One resident keen to serve on council has already closed the door on the option, claiming the incomplete local environment plan (LEP) which will determine the future development of the town, rules out his candidature.

Ian Hay, who has big plans for development at his Cowra Rd property, says the LEP draft needs to be out before he could nominate, otherwise as a councillor he would always be declaring an interest in topics, and excluded from debate.

Mr Hay said his predicament is not a singular one, with other would be councillors also locked out of the race this year because the LEP had not yet been finalised.

Jessica Forde, who contested Burrinjuck for Labor at the last elections and showed an early interest in standing for council has also decided against nominating this time around.

Ms Forde who works with former councillor and member of the state Legislative Council Mick Veitch, had attended council meetings and an electoral commission introduction to the role. But this week she took herself out of the race saying work commitments would prevent her involvement.

There are a number of possible candidates with Burrangong Action Committee leaders Ted Loader and Doug McCormick not yet ruling themselves either in or out of the race, and steadfastly attending council meetings.

Harden Shire Council administrative officer Kevin Cloake is also weighing up his desire to represent Young against long hours and work commitments.

Mr Cloake, who has lived in Young for seven years, observed the last council meeting and will be back again next week.

Another resident considering the possibility of standing is Nikki Gordon who runs a farm on the Temora Road with her husband, Jim.

In April Mark Wells, Young Community Group Chairman announced his intention to stand and at the time he foreshadowed a joint ticket tactic.

This week Mr Wells had not shifted his stance, predicting many people considering a tilt at council would not make their intentions known until the last minute.

“You can’t have too many people running for council, you are simply giving the towns people a choice, only nine people running for nine positions is no choice at all.”

Another of those possible contenders is Mark Foreman, whose only concern about standing is his existing time constraints.

“I have had a couple of people approach me and want me to front their ticket on the ballot because a few people are disappointed about what is going on,” he said.

“I really think everyone needs a voice, and a few people out there are not getting heard at the moment.”

Treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce Joanne Johnson regularly attends council meetings to report back to her association, but says she definitely has no plan to move from the gallery to sit around the councillors’ table, and will not nominate for the election.
