IT could have been a very different outcome for an 18-year-old female driver and her passenger on Wednesday night, if there been people standing at the South West Slopes Credit Union ATM, when she lost control of the car she was driving and slammed into the front door of the business
Young Police acting Inspector Mark Hayson said the P-Plate driver was travelling in an easterly direction when she exited the roundabout on the corner on Lynch and Boorowa Streets.
The car left the roadway and collided with a tree before it knocked over a council garbage bin after it mounted the footpath and slammed into the South West Slopes Credit Union.
Paramedic Andrew Long said Young Ambulance Service received the call at 8.56pm and conveyed the driver to Young District Hospital with suspected neck injuries.
Sally Druitt from Greater Southern Area Health Service said the woman was released from the emergency department at about 11pm.
Acting Inspector Hayson said investigations are ongoing with no infringement notices issued to date.
Acting Inspector Hayson also said the damage to the South West Slopes Credit Union could amount to thousands of dollars.
The incident comes as a timely reminder to all motorists to slow down and take it easy on the roads and drive to the conditions, especially in the wet.
General manager of South West Slopes Credit Union Steve Elsley said the accident had the potential to be so much worse.
“There is some structural damage to the brickwork and the we are waiting on the guys from Wagga to come over and fix the automatic doors,” Mr Elsley said.
“We were pretty lucky, the guys from Framaglass did a good job on Wednesday night and came back yesterday morning.
“Really I think the damage was fairly minor, but things could have been just so much worse,” he said.
The Credit Union is currently having the full extent of the damage assessed.
Investigations are continuing with police waiting on blood results.
