End of an era for JD’s Jam Factory

End of an era for JD’s Jam Factory

09 Sep, 2009 09:13 AM
I would like to thank all the staff over the years for helping JD’s to be a success and our loyal locals who visited regularly.

This is probably the hardest letter I have had to write, but I do want to say a special thank you to my friends who supported me in the last 11 months through the hardest times to try and keep JD’s alive.

Finally JD’s is closed and I am ready to move on, I really hope that someone will come along and start JD’s all over again – after all it has been, and can be, a very successful business.

Our family put their hearts and souls into JD’s and we will always be proud of what we accomplished.

We are especially proud of the way JD’s brought people from far and wide into the town.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart to the town of Young, the fruit growers, the tourist centre and all the businesses and motels who sent customers to JD’s when they arrived in Young.

Thank you and goodbye,

Jan Donges

We are so saddened in hearing the news of your closure, twice a year we come down to Young from Sydney and always come to JD's Jam as one of our highlights of our visit to Young. We will miss you and Young will never be the same again.

JD's cherry jam has been a favourite of mine for years. Since I couldn't buy it in Brisbane where I've lived for the past 9 years, I have several times ordered boxes of a dozen bottles for courier delivery, as JD's was the BEST sweet cherry jam on the market. I will MISS it. Best wishes to the Donges family and the town of Young (where I did the Leaving Certificate in 1962.)

I am very, very sorry to hear this news. I always kept a look out for your Big Island cherry jam (my favourite) and the chilli cherry sauce (unbeatable flavour!) Now that I need more, I am upset that this can no longer be. I extend my best wishes to you and your family and hope that perhaps some wonderful person will be able to take up the project that you so successfully began. Good luck to you.

I did not know until now that JD's had closed. A tragedy. The cherry jam was sensational, but my absolute favourite was the tomato relish/ chutney which was the best commercial version I have ever tasted. I was always seeking it out in Canberra. Is there any chance of the factory opening again? What happened to the recipes?

Good question is why did Mark Smith of Parkes fame run Les and Jan's twenty five years of work down to nothing in no time at all? All the noise about export markets, revamps, tourist accommodation ; what a load of hot air!!

I've been searching for Young Maid jams in stores for ages now, since Woolworths stop selling them. Now i know why they stopped. Yet another Aussie brand name gone, along with all the livelihoods of those who depended on it. Where was the support from our useless Labor Government in all of this?
