PARLIAMENTARY secretary assisting the Minister of Rural Affairs and Primary Industries, Mick Veitch, who has been working quietly behind the scenes to organise Government action following the surprise closure of Burrangong Meat Processors, has disclosed another aspect to the calamity.
There were between 12 and 15 overseas workers employed at Burrangong who are holders of the 457 visa, which enable skilled workers to come from overseas and work in Australia, they too have not been paid their final week’s wage, are not entitled to GEERS benefits and have only 28 days to find another job.
“I hope things are moving in the right direction up there,” said Mr Veitch.
“Immigration was in Young on Friday and my priority has always been to make sure this was dealt with promptly, I was glad to see that Minister Macdonald was able to change his itinerary to be able to be here.
“At the moment Senator Ursula Stephen’s office is working with the Department of Immigration to sort this out.
“The main thing to do now is to make sure no-one is left behind,” said Mr Veitch.
