Hard work pays off for Young High students

18 Dec, 2009 10:27 AM
THE anxious wait for many Young High students is now over with Higher School Certificate (HSC) results being released on Wednesday and their University Admissions Index (UAI) released yesterday.

Young High principal, Steve Harvey, said the results were very impressive.

“Not only did we get strong performances from the students we expected, but across the board kids were getting what they wanted,” Mr Harvey said.

Maxine Kerr received a band six for biology and advanced maths and band fives for chemistry, advanced English and personal development health and physical education (PDHPE) and an E3 (which was the second high mark) in extension maths.

Maxine will spend the next year doing a business services traineeship with the Hillstreet Group before going to Australian National University (ANU) to study science majoring in biology and genetics.

The long hours Maxine has put into her studies has paid off with her results being better than expected.

“I am very happy with them, it was a bit of a shock to wake up to – a nice surprise though,” Maxine said.

The UAI was the icing on the cake for Maxine after receiving 94.7, which will open up a variety of opportunities.

Maxine has also been recognised by the Riverina regional director, Colin Parker on her mark.

“These students are the cream of the 2009 HSC crop,” Mr Parker said.

Tom Mulquiney was another student who achieved exceptional results especially in PDHPE, legal studies, maths and geography.

“I am extremely happy with my results,” Tom said.

He will now participate in a gap year with the army but will commence a university degree at ANU studying ‘something to do with geography’.

Chris Forbutt has done Young High School proud with achieving at a high standard in a vocational education course of automotives.

“I was very happy with my marks, they are good and what I was aiming for,” Chris said.

Chris will now have a gap year travelling and working before settling into university life in Wollongong with a flexible entry in engineering.

Being a flexible entry, Chris does not have to decide which area of engineering he wants to specialise in until after his first year of study.

Jake Fountain has a passion for music and animals and is going to study both of them and with impressive HSC results he will be able to.

“I am relatively happy with them, especially my music and physics,” Jake said.

Next year, Jake will go to Orange to study a music course through TAFE however he will make the transition to university to undergo veterinary science.

With a UAI of 87.3 there will be plenty of offers for him to pursue his dream.

“Music is my passion and I have wanted to do veterinary science since primary school,” Jake said.

Lucy Apps was one very happy girl on Wednesday after receiving her HSC results with particular excitement over her maths, biology, hospitality and geography results.

With a UAI of 75.65, Lucy now hopes to go on and study a bachelor of science at the University of Wollongong (UOW) but is still yet to decide which area she will specialise in.

Emily Green achieved HSC results above her expectation and a UAI of 94.8.

“They’re good, I am happy with them, they are much higher than I expected, especially in English,” Emily said.

For the next year, Emily will continue working at Target before going on to study to be a plastic surgeon at ANU.

The Young Witness congratulates all students on their results.
