The exact date the gates were stolen is not clear, but police say it occurred sometime between April 22 and May 2.
Frank Baker, a member of the village Progress Association, said he is disappointed at the senseless act.
“I think it’s pretty petty and very low,” Mr Baker said.
He is a regular visitor to the cemetery where his wife Helen is buried.
“I hope the ghosts eat away at your conscious,” was his message to the thieves.
Murringo cemetery dates back to the early 1850s and attracts many visitors who are tracing their family history or view the historic graves and pay their respects, the Progress Association hope those responsible return the gates.
“If your conscence has gotten the better of you – just drop them back at the site and no questions asked – we just want the gates back,” Association President Heather Ritchie said.
The gates are made from iron ore, a rusty colour and were situated at the Catholic entrance to the village cemetery.
Ms Ritchie said she hopes auctioneers consider the gates looking similar to the ones pictured are not sold at an auction.
Cootamundra Local Area Command acting Sergeant crime co-ordinator Roy Elmes said the community can help by calling police on 6382 8199.
