Large crowd flocks to carols for Christmas celebrations

23 Dec, 2009 08:47 AM
YOUNG put on a perfect summer evening on Sunday for the traditional carols by candlelight in Carrington Park and organisers say the event was a resounding success.

Double the number of programs were printed this year and there were still not enough to go round the big gathering.

Estimates put the crowd at between 800-1000 people who were able to relax in the manicured grounds of Carrington Park and enjoy the sounds of Christmas with family, friends and neighbours.

Organised by the Ministers’ Fraternal, a group of ministers from the seven major churches in Young, the carols featured music from a number of local outfits.

Earlier in the evening the Young Regional School of Music’s (YRSM) jazz ensemble kept the large crowd entertained before the Young Town Band, the YRSM youth band and a combined choir joined together for the recital of the carols.

On hand during the evening were members of ‘Fusion’, a Christian-based community organisation which provided games and entertainment for those young at heart members of the crowd.

Local businesses contributed to the evening including Gary’s Gourmet Meats who supplied the barbecue while the New Life Community Church and the Young Baptist Church provided drinks and food.

Reverend Tim Ravenhall from the Presbyterian Church in Young, along with his wife Susan, helped to organise this year’s event on behalf of the Ministers’ Fraternal.

“We’re very pleased in terms of people who turned out to support it... we want to personally thank the community for being involved,” Mr Ravenhall said
