Local officer wins award

12 Nov, 2009 09:04 AM
ONE of Young’s Police officers have been recognised with a top award for his service as a domestic violence officer to the community.

Senior Constable Paul Wilcox was oblivious to the nomination, which was lodged by the victims themselves and his fellow colleagues for the Commissioners Customer Service Officer of the Year 2009 award.

“I knew something was in the wind but I wasn’t sure exactly what it was,” Senior Constable Wilcox said.

This prestigious award is given to a sworn NSW Police officer within the state, who has provided an outstanding level of customer service to his or her clients.

“When I received the phone call from the Commissioner to say I had won, I thought it was a gee-up,” Senior Constable Wilcox said.

Across the state there were over 100 applications for this award and the Cootamundra Local Area Command (LAC) won it, but for Senior Constable, Wilcox he is just fulfilling his duty.

“Every Police officer in NSW joins for the same purpose – to make a difference and I’m doing it through domestic violence,” he said.

“I am incredibly humble for the award, but I am just doing my job,” Senior Constable Wilcox said.

“Someone has to be the voice for the victims, and that’s me,” he said.

But this doesn’t mean Senior Constable Wilcox turns a blind eye to other police matters.

“If I see something, I’ll act on it,” he said.

Senior Constable Wilcox has been with the LAC for three years and fellow colleague, Sergeant David Cockram said anyone who has dealt with him will agree he is passionate about what he does.

“All who have had dealings with Paul will agree, he has a devotion to his duty and strives to reduce family violence within the command,” Sergeant Cockram said.

“He provides support to all victims of domestic violence, which includes providing advice in relation to the Criminal Justice process, and also providing support via external agencies such as Mission Australia, DOCS, DOH and community health, depending on the individual needs of a particular person,” Sergeant Cockram said.

“Paul attends court on average about three times per week and provides direct advice to Local Court Magistrates in regard to all DV related matters in the command,” he said.

Senior Constable Wilcox is heavily involved in developing procedures for use by police in the LAC and the education of police in regards to the investigation of all domestic violence related incidents.

“Above all, Paul is committed to his role and provides an excellent standard of service to victims and families of domestic violence,” Sergeant Cockcram said.

“The Cootamundra LAC is proud of his achievement and consider him to be a real asset to the command,” he said.

This award comes in addition to the other recognition that he has received, including awards from TAFE NSW, Australian National University and a certificate from Assistant Commissioner Reg Mahoney.
