JOHN Wilmott-Potts worked for Qantas for 27 years and there is no doubt that he saw a collection of uniforms come and go.
It was from his career as a passenger handling agent at Sydney airport and then later a flight attendant, that Mr Wilmott-Potts found inspiration for a unique hobby of dressing barbie dolls in the 46 different uniforms Qantas have had since 1938.
It has taken him six years but his collection is finally complete.
Mr Wilmott-Potts’ collection dates back to the very first uniform released in 1938 and most outfits are modelled on the USA teenage fashion Barbie and Ken dolls.
After having the dolls displayed in his home for several years, Mr Wilmott-Potts has donated his treasure to the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney where they will be put on show for public viewing.
Every ten years, Qantas update their uniforms and that means it is back to the sewing machine for Mr Wilmott-Potts – but his reason behind his unique hobby is simple.
“It is good fun making them,” he said.
“It’s a personal hobby and I collect model aeroplanes as well,” he said.
“It is the fascination of flying and Qantas was a great company to work for,” Mr Wilmott-Potts said.
