Mayhem on main

BOOROWA Street in Young was thrown into temporary confusion at about 2pm on Wednesday afternoon when emergency services were called to a motor accident involving no less than four vehicles which partially blocked the main street and totally blocked one footpath for a short time.

Police, ambulance and the fire brigade were called to the scene near the Delta Real Estate office to find one car sitting across the footpath and the car parked next to it damaged on the passenger’s side, allegedly by a white Commodore sedan.

Police allege the Commodore had crossed the street at speed from a car park on other side.

Inspector John Sheehan from Young Police said the matter is still under investigation and all witness statements have yet to be taken.

“At this stage it would appear that a 76 year-old male driver had pulled out of a parking spot on the other side of the street and was about to turn into the traffic stream,” said Inspector Sheehan.

“We think he may have stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal.

“From our initial enquiries he appears to have then collided with a grey vehicle travelling in an eastward direction from the bottom end of town, before then colliding with another two vehicles on the other side of the street,” said Insp Sheehan.

Ambulance officer, Andrew Long, said no-one was seriously injured in the accident although one female was conveyed to hospital with minor injuries and was later released.

Captain Stan Reimer from the New South Wales Fire Brigade in Young said the brigade had been called to the scene as a precautionary measure but had not been needed.

“It’s procedure that we attend accidents in case of fire,” said Captain Reimer.

“This one was not very bad compared to some of the others I have seen, there was no fire so we weren’t needed.

“Just looking at the scene I think we were very lucky things turned out the way they did because things could have ended up being a lot worse.”

Inspector Sheehan said police have not yet laid any charges relating to the accident and an investigation is still underway.
