New rules for learner drivers

24 Sep, 2009 11:22 AM
NEW rules that extend the demerit point system to learner drivers, to encourage safer driving among young people have been announced by the State government.

Minister for Transport, David Campbell, said the system to take effect from September 28 means learner drivers will have their licence suspended for three months for any speeding offence.

“The new rules mean learner drivers will lose a minimum of four points if they are caught speeding and have their licence suspended for at least three months,” Mr Campbell said.

“Learner licence holders caught speeding by more than 30kmh will have their licence suspended for six months and those caught speeding by more than 45kmh will have their licence suspended for nine months.

“Heavy penalties including a jail sentence and disqualification from driving may be imposed by a court if a learner is convicted of driving while suspended,” Mr Campbell said.
