SAMANATHA Cooke from Young High School is a very keen musician and this weekend will put her skills on show at the annual School Spectacular event in Sydney.
School Spectacular is the world’s largest variety show, which allows students from all music and drama backgrounds to combine together and create a ‘School Spectacular’.
You don’t even need to be musically gifted, or a performer, there are roles behind the scenes on the production side of the show.
The event has been going since 1984 and has been a stepping stone for a highly successful careers for many performers over the years.
Sami as she likes to be known, is a Year-8 student at Young High who will be performing 26 songs in six shows over two days.
It sounds tiring just reading it, imagine performing it, but for Sami it is all just helping her build a music career.
Sami became involved in School Spectacular after being informed about a choir and the opportunity to go on a camp and learn more about it.
From there, Sami went on to sing in the State Choir at the Oprah House in Sydney, and then after being nominated by her school, she was selected to perform at School Spectacular this year.
The event incorporates students from across the state, and Sami believes the best part of it is meeting new people.
“I get to meet a lot of people who like the same thing because here in Young a lot of my friends don’t do anything musical so it is hard to find those with similar interests,” Sami said.
Sami started off as a saxophone player, then turned to the drums, now self teaching herself the keyboard and guitar so she can combine her singing talent with an instrument.
For three years, Sami has been singing solo, but now enjoying the opportunity to sing with other great artists.
When asked what she hopes to get out of School Spectacular?
“I hope to use it as a stepping stone and an opportunity to go somewhere else,” she said.
“But of course I’d like to have a lot of fun as well,” Sami said.
Sami is only 13, but is already teaching others to sing.
And what does Sami want to do in life?
“I want to be the next Delta Goodrem or Celine Dion,” Sami said.
