St Mary’s Primary students veg out

06 Jul, 2009 11:04 AM
5B students at St Mary’s Primary School have been getting down and dirty all in the name of their new class project. Miss Baker and her students have discussed, planned and now built their own Vegie Patch next to their classroom.

On Saturday 27 June, under threatening grey skies, 5B had a working bee to construct the much anticipated Vegie Patch. Parents, students, siblings and Miss Kerrie-Anne Baker worked hard to create the class project. A huge thank you to the parents who helped with the organisation of many things including spraying, providing sleepers, sheep manure, top soil, donation of money and afternoon tea!

This Vegie Patch is designed to help the students understand how to be resourceful, how to maintain and care for the plants and how to work as a team in order to get the plants to grow! It is hoped that the vegetables will grow in abundance, and the students will be able to take them home to cook or sell them in the canteen! The children are also contributing to the compost by using their Fruit Break scraps as fertilizer for the vegetables.
