YOUNG High students can breathe a little easier this week knowing that while they are in the midst of the Higher School Certificate (HSC) they already have openings for their dream career.
After a principal’s recommendation the students received a letter last week informing them they had been successful in gaining early entry at either University of Wollongong (UOW), University of Canberra (UC) or University of New England (UNE) in Armidale.
For Lucy Apps the end of the HSC will spend her time working to save money while making the most of the end of her school life with the plan to attend a ‘schoolies’ trip.
Lucy applied for a Bachelor of Science at both UOW and UC and was successful in both. For her career, Lucy is not entirely sure what she wants to do, but has a genuine interest in medicine and the environment.
“It is exciting and takes a bit of the pressure for the HSC off,” Lucy said.
In addition to UOW and UC, Lucy also applied for the same course at Charles Sturt University (CSU) but has to wait until after she completes her HSC to see if she has been accepted.
To date, Lucy was not sure which offer she would take, but would consider them all.
“I’m not sure yet, Wollongong would be good because it has a beach,” she said.
Sophie Smithers has an ambition to one day become a politician.
She enjoys foreign affairs, peace keeping and politics and has applied to do a combined degree of arts and international studies.
Sophie was accepted into both UC and UOW and is yet to decide on which offer to take.
By studying the double degree, Sophie opens up career opportunities in government departments and foreign affairs but would secretly love to be the Prime Minister of Australia.
“It is nice to know that my options are extended now,” Sophie said.
After completing her HSC, Sophie plans to travel before starting university next year.
Abby Johnson dreams of being an English and social science teacher and has applied to do a Bachelor of Arts at UC and CSU in Bathurst.
Abby was successful with her application to UC and has to wait until the completion of the HSC before hearing back from CSU.
Between the end of the HSC and University next year, Abby will spend her time working at Sportspower in Young.
“I’m happy to have it and it’s nice to have a backup plan,” Abby said.
Callum Laker has a variety options to choose from.
At UOW, Callum applied for a Bachelor of Education majoring in infant teaching and at UC he applied for a Bachelor of Arts majoring in geography.
Callum is not completely sure what direction he wants to take, but would like to maybe one day get into geographic forestry but is grateful for the support given to him by his school.
“I would like to thank Young High for my education and can’t wait to begin at uni,” Callum said.
Chris Forbit and many other students received early entry as well and The staff at The Young Witness congratulates all students who received an offer.
