Taste of Tafe

06 Jul, 2009 11:01 AM
LOCAL high school students were given the chance to experience TAFE last Thursday when the Young campus held its ‘Taste of TAFE’ program.

About 120 Year 10 students from Hennessy Catholic College and Young High School spent the day in classrooms and workshops gaining hands on experience of TAFE - delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

The TVET classes on offer can be incorporated into the student’s HSC studies next year with credits gained going towards their final marks, giving them a head start in their chosen career.

The students were able to talk with TAFE teachers and also take part in practical activities to find out whether TVET was the right choice for them.

Areas covered included nursing pathways, children’s services, make-up services as well as automotive and electrical.

Those considering a career in the beauty industry were able to practice their skills on fellow students while the TAFE’s workshops allowed budding electricians and mechanics to get their hands dirty.

Currently there are 200 students undertaking TVET classes from the Young and Cootamundra TAFE campuses.
