A MAN who has been dubbed the angel of the skies was yesterday elevated to the stage of Young’s Town Hall and into the annals of local history as he was named Young’s 2012 Australia Day Citizen of the Year.
Doug Benson, who once courted dreams of flying full time, now does it part-time as a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight. He has completed 51 missions since he got his Angel wings in December 2010 - all non-emergency flights to help country people trying to deal with issues of bad health, poor finances and distance to get much-needed treatment. All flights are free and involve patients travelling to medical facilities anywhere in Australia.
He was presented with his award yesterday by Australia Day Ambassador Ray Warren.
Katie Blair and David Munnerley each shared the honour of Junior Citizen of the Year award, presented by Young Shire councillor Sandy Freudenstein. Kate for her contributions to the Salvation Army and volunteer work with 2YYY and her commitment to fundraising for the 2011 Young Cherry Festival Cherry Queen competition.
The Young Flood Relief Team, headed by Roy Jewitt and Paul Gembles, were recipients of the Community Service Award, presented by Cr John McGregor. The two tradies took a team of 27 volunteers to Queensland three times to assist with flood recovery last year.
Young Regional School of Music was presented with the Cultural Award for their efforts in getting renowned flautist Jane Rutter to perform in town last year.
Swimming stalwart Brian Williamson got his dues yesterday when he was presented with the Community Service - Individual for his 34 year involvement with the Young Amateur Swimming Club, where he has coached and trained youngsters for regional and state carnivals on a voluntary basis.
The Mayoral Award went to local couple, Emma and Peter Cockburn, for their work in the promotion of driveway safety following the loss of their daughter Georgina in April last year. When accepting their award, an emotional Emma and Peter said January 12 was Georgina’s birthday and was the beginning of a big year ahead, which includes establishment of a foundation in her name.
