Wheelchair odessy coming to Young

30 Jul, 2010 09:07 AM
THIS Saturday about 3pm, a manual wheelchair will be rolled in to Young, on its way from Wallendbeen.

The chair began its journey in Perth on April 23 and has been pushed by teams of volunteers, covering about 50km a day, towards the goal of reaching Sydney’s Victoria Barracks on Sunday, August 15.

The BIGROLL, organised by the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation, aims to raise awareness of the difficulties and challenges faced by disabled people and their carers.

Braydon Walker and Daryl Blundell are both students Young High School who use wheelchairs.

They say that Young is a fairly wheelchair friendly town because it is mostly flat.

“Most of the shops on the main street we can access with ease,” Braydon said, “but there’s just a couple that we can’t get into.”

The pair said they would like to see more access ramps and more wheelchair accessible toilets around the town.

Throughout NSW the BIGROLL will have to travel mostly by car. The NSW police would not allow them to roll the wheelchair on the roads as they have done elsewhere. They do, however, have permission to push the wheelchair once inside the urban limits of each town.

The BIGROLL organisation is encouraging locals, especially those who are disabled or elderly and using wheelchairs or gophers, to join them in a parade through the town.

The group will also be demonstrating two small wheelchair accessible vehicles – a Toyota that has an electric wheelchair built in to the passenger seat, and a Nissan with a wide opening rear door and fold down ramp.

The group will remain in Young for a scheduled rest day on Sunday before travelling on to Yass via Murrumburrah and Harden on Monday.

The funds raised, through sponsorship and any donations received along the way, will go towards continuing the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation’s programs for disabled, elderly and special needs people in Sydney.
