Women unite for a cause

26 Feb, 2010 08:25 AM
WOMEN in Young and across the country will unite as one and be recognised for their contribution to their community on Monday, March 8 in celebration of International Women’s Day.

Carrington Park will come alive with food, entertainment and guest speakers who have come from all walks of life from 10am to 1pm.

Women of all ages, nationalities and beliefs are invited to attend and celebrate the achievements they have made within their lives.

On the day there will be guest speeches from everyday women from Young who will share their story and inspire other women to stand together and be united as one.

Minda Mendoza was born in the Philippines and moved to Australia in 1987 where she began her career in social security in Sydney.

After her sister’s husband became ill in 1999, Minda left Sydney and came to Young where she began working for Centrelink.

In her speech, Minda hopes to draw on life experiences and encourage women to remember they can be successful within their careers.

Minda said she hopes to not only inspire women but everyone.

“I like the multiculturalism and I’d like to help all types of people and I think I am very approachable to be able to do that,” Minda said.

Jennifer Duddle is a firm believer in doing what you can for someone else and said she the power of education is essential.

“Anything you can do to help women should be done and any form of education is good and I encourage everyone to come along to Women’s Day,” Jennifer said.

Jennifer holds retreat days at her property to empower women to be the best they can because she believes ‘women in the world are oppressed’.

Maria Freeman is originally from Harden and is an inspiration to all women.

Maria is a foster mum to a little boy who is two and a girl who is 20 months.

Last year, Maria lost her brother who was a huge help with the two little kids, but yet such a tragedy has not held Maria back.

Maria is also a breast cancer survivor and while she will not be in remission for another two years, her trail of disappointing circumstances have only encouraged Maria to continue being the rock for her family.

“Having the kids takes my mind of the cancer,” Maria said.

“I encourage other women to always look for the positive in every situation.

“I have been sexually assaulted been through domestic violence and cancer, yet I still remain the rock for my family.

“I just want to put the word out there because I am scared to come forward.

“There is help for women going through anything and I just want to prove if I can do so can anyone else,” Maria said.
