Athletes do well in Temora

18 Nov, 2009 08:27 AM
HEAT and school excursions made our numbers a little more manageable this week, however, our nights are still running for almost three hours due to a lack of parent help and the large numbers.

Parents are encouraged to assist in any way that they can. There are many different jobs to be done, whether they are assisting with your child’s age group, timekeeping, or recording. Because we have such large numbers this year, any help that you can give will be much appreciated and help the nights run smoother and quicker.

Parents, please remember that if you do assist, to write your name down on the duty roster so that you can be entered into the draw for a lunch voucher at Café de Jour and a family pass from Questacon. If parents assist over 75% of the time, they then have their $20 duty bond refunded at the end of the season.

Little Athletics have been approached with the offer of a truck to enter the upcoming Cherry Festival Parade. We will be asking for any interested parents and children to put their names down this week if they would like to be on the float or assist in decorating the truck. Although we entered a float last year, it was poorly attended. If we do not have any names put forward, we will not be able to enter a float. We would really love it if some parents with creative flair would like to assist in making this float an absolutely awesome sight to behold, overflowing with heaps of keen little athletes as are our club nights. Please let us know if you are interested in making this years float the best ever!

Only two age groups were eligible for improvement points in two different events this week.

Those receiving points were:

U7s: Bridie Minehan (70m), Faith White (70m), Niamh McGahan (70m), Matilda Metcalfe (70m), Jasmine Mitchell (70m), Clementine Flannery (70m), Pilan Fitzpatrick (70m).

Jack (70m), Luke Tierney (70m), Lachlan Crouch (70m), Blake Van Klooster (70m).

U8s: Harriet Wallace (100m), Kourtney Stephens (100m), Nick Jenkins (100m), Kalid Ali (100m), Nicholas Zirkzee (100m).

Several of our athletes travelled to Junee and Temora over the weekend of November 7 and 8.

Caitlin Silk had an absolute blinder at Temora in the under 13s, not only winning the three events that she contested, but breaking the current records in all three events! Caitlin’s first record was in the 80m hurdles, slicing up the opposition to post a time of 13.69, taking almost one second off the previous record. She then took .13 off the 16 year old record for the 100m by flying through the finish line in 13.56 seconds. Taking the 200m record was simply icing on the cake as she took .58 of a second off the record (also of 16 years) when she flew through with 28.16 seconds.

Other results from Temora were:

U9s: Izabella Burns, 4th 100m (21.13); 2nd 400m (1.50.66); 2nd 800m (3.56.63).

Four of our athletes – the Cross family from Harden, and the Johnson family from Boorowa, travelled to Wagga Open Carnival on November 15, for a very hot, but well organised day of athletics.

Results are as follows:

U10s: Samantha Cross: 3rd LJ (2.83); 3rd HJ (.95); 1st 60mH (13.65); 1st 800m (3.29); Patrick Johnson: 2nd LJ (3.25); 2nd 100m (16.38); 3rd 60mH (12.57); 3rd Discus (16.93); 2nd 800m; 3rd 200m.

U12s: Steven Cross: 1st 1500m (5.46.78 – PB); 3rd discus (21.49).

Helen Johnson also competed in the Under 13s events, and, although not figuring in the medals, put in a great performance on a very hot day in her first carnival for the season.

The current heatwave is being addressed through the Heat and Hydration guidelines as dictated through Little Athletics NSW. Temperatures will be taken throughout the day at Gus Smith Oval, and if the temperature exceeds 40 degrees, competition will be postponed for this week. Parents – please make sure that your children are well hydrated before attending on Wednesday night. Fill them up with water around an hour before attending and please make sure that they have water, a hat, and sunscreen. There is sunscreen available at the canteen, and we also have several mist sprays that are used around the finishing line for athletes as they finish their races.

This week is week four of the program – hurdles week.
