Excellent racing at Young trots

03 Feb, 2010 09:16 AM
THE Young Harness Racing Club conducted another successful meeting under threatening skies on Sunday evening with excellent racing the order of the night.

The opening event resulted in a win for the Junee Reefs-trained four-year-old Abovenbeyond who led throughout to defeat Sunlit Plains who had the sit behind the leader, getting out in the straight with the locally trained Minute Maker again doing his best work at the finish to take third money.

The Jim Harris-driven pacer was sent out a $2.20 favourite and never really looked like getting beaten, the Life Sign mare now posting seven wins from only 23 starts.

The second of the day saw Dizzy Diva finish strongly from fourth at the bell to score by neck from the highly fancied Goodoldcollingwood with Alladan for trainer Kevin Brooks and Mirrool driver Stephen Maquire ten metres away in third place.

The $22.70 win dividend on the TAB made the win more enjoyable for trainer Cheryl Harpley, the winner now recording her third win from 11 starts.

The first of the three feature races, the L.W. & E.M. Hunter Memorial, was taken out by the Wyalong-trained Girlsniteout who raced midfield for most of the journey with the Goulburn-trained The Golden Lord setting the pace up front.

As the 400m marker appeared Girlsniteout was able to go to the lead, coming away in the straight to defeat Perfect Jenna who ran on well with Spooky Leigh looking a threat in the back straight finishing third.

The Grenfell mare Burning Stature was sent out a short-priced favourite in race four but after leading for most of the journey was run down over the concluding stages by the evergreen 13-year-old gelding Strings Attached who recorded his second win in 10 days for Dubbo mentor Warwick Harper.

Proving that you can improve with age the $4000 claimer recorded his 37th win after being sixth at the bell and circling the field to score by four metres from Burning Stature who will surely be improved by her three recent runs, the locally trained Starbyebye ran an improved race to finish third.

Another short-priced favourite went down in race five when last-start Canberra winner failed to fire and finished fourth.

The race was taken out by Amazing Spirit who was sent out second favourite and the Ray Lennane-owned four-year-old Strong Life mare gave her backers a great sight in recording a comfortable win with Eclipsoftheheart and Yontian taking the minor money.

Seadragon, after racing one-out one-back finished 14 metres from the winner.

Local driver Josh Powderly bounced back into the winner’s circle when the highly fancied Millionsofhilites took out the Bob Hardy Memorial Silver Gig, leading throughout to defeat second favourite Miss Bumpers and outsider Raptingold.

The winning mile rate of 2:03.1min securing the silver gig, a nice result for local owners Tarsha and Wayne Friend who have only been in the sport for a short time.

The three-year-old pace resulted in the biggest winning margin of the night for the Bathurst-trained Kingdom Of Joy driven by John Oshea.

Coming from an awkward draw, the DM Dillinger gelding secured the one-one position at the bell finishing strongly in defeating the fancied Wasntmenttobeeasy and the lightly raced Sinistra who will win a race shortly for Stephen Dowton.

The final event on the programme, the second division of the Bob Hardy Memorial had some pre-race dramas when the eventual winner and pole marker Highland Olive caused two false starts before leading throughout in the third score up to take the money from the fast finishing Rumple Dandy and Walhalla Dreamgirl.

The meeting was able to be completed without any weather disturbances and the club looks forward to their next meeting on Friday, February 12.
