 Fall in second at Young

Fall in second at Young

18 Nov, 2009 08:22 AM
AS predicted in Friday’s issue of the Young Witness, patrons were treated to some excellent racing at the paceway last Friday afternoon. Conditions were generally very good with a light breeze keeping the temperature to an acceptable level.

The opening event resulted in a win for local trainer driver Maurice Johnson with his seven year old mare Sunshine Daisy. Coming off the second row, the astute mentor realized mid race that the pace was unsuitable and whipped around an unexpecting field to take the lead, drawing away in the final stages to score a convincing win from the vastly improved Midgee Mo and Walhalla Dreamgirl. The win and minor placing resulted in a handsome four figure trifecta for those with an eye for value.

In race two the Bathurst trained Barzona Highway had too much class for the opposition scoring impressively from Bye Bye Kylie and Smooth Bye Bye. In a race that had plenty of excitement, the Michael Hardy trained and driven Rushing Royalty almost came down on the turn into the straight the first time, thankfully both horse and driver escaped unscathed. Followers of this column would have had a nice little return with the trifecta paying handsomely.

Race three produced another four fiqure trifecta when Brian Smith drove Gifted Knight a confident race to take the money from Bella Vista Drive and Curly Shannon in a good finish. Outside the leader for most of the journey, Gifted Knight showed great strength to get the judges pat, scoring by a head and posting win number three for the son of triple Inter Dominion winner Our Sir Vancelot.

Race four resulted in another win for the thirteen year old evergreen Dubbo pacer Strings Attached who proved too classy for Laughing Lenny and Sir Charge. This particular pacer has had two hundred and fifty five starts with thirty five wins to his credit, what an effort. He started his career at Ballarat in April 2000 winning his first race as a three year old at Bachus Marsh in June 2000. He was transferred to sunny Queensland in August 2003 joining the stables of Grant Dixon before heading back south to Sydney in January 2006 and then out to Dubbo with current trainer Warwick Harper, what a life.

Bathurst driver Emma Turnbull produced a good drive to get Three Sailors over the line ahead of Star Of Bert and Panorama Ice in race five.

The Western Districts trio had it between themselves over the concluding stages of the race, the winner drawing away to score by a convincing margin. The Grenfell mare Burning Stature was more than impressive in taking out race six from Polo Woodbury who ran a nice race and Hares Crossing. Taken up to sit outside the leader, Burning Stature certainly showed her class in a bold first up run since December last year and stamped herself as a mare with a great future. Trainer Mark Hewitt presented the five year old daughter of Stature in perfect shape which resulted in win number eleven for the lightly raced mare.

The final race of the day was again an all local affair with Mick “Bub” Day taking the money with the front running Yontian for owner Ray Lennane and trainer Michael Hardy. Placegetters Tully Belle and Delayed Settlement had there chances but the move to take Yontian to the lead early paid off, the driver keeping the pace on throughout resulting in a smart 2:01.4min mile rate being posted. The Young club race again on Friday, November 27 followed by a meeting on December 4. Plans are well under way for the popular Carnival of Cups meeting to be held as a twilight meeting on Sunday, January 3, the club confident of another top programme of racing.
