LOCAL rider Bridget Sell and her horse ‘Universal Law’ have taken out the Show Horse Council of NSW’s “Horse of the Year”.
Competing against 32 other riders in the adult rider over 21 category, the pair was up against some of the best riders from across the state when they took to the arena at the Hawkesbury Showgrounds on October 17.
Sell said she had been very proud to win the title which is judged by a panel of three who look at the “movement, manners and education” of each horse.
“I’m very proud, every big thing like that holds a lot of prestige,” Sell said.
“There were amateurs and professionals competing and this is just a hobby for me, a very serious hobby, but to win against professionals was great,” she said.
Starting life as a racehorse in Grenfell, ‘Universal Law’ was four-years-old when Sell purchased the Thoroughbred which she now uses for dressage as well.
The win means Sell and ‘Universal Law’ now qualify for the Grand National event next year in Sydney which will pit rider and horse against the best in the country.
It will be Sell’s sixth Grand National and she said unlike the NSW event, the Grand National had only one judge.
“I’ll be up there, but it comes down to the opinion of one person,” she said when asked of her chances.
