A State of Origin of sorts took place at the PCYC on Friday morning when local high school students played Robina State High School in a series of friendly futsal games.
The Robina High open girl’s futsal team had travelled to Young to play in a tournament which for reasons unknown had been cancelled.
After hearing of the Queenslander’s situation, a hastily convened team of students from Hennessy Catholic College and Young High School was put together on Thursday night for the visitors to play against in lieu of the scheduled tournament.
Phil Mitchell from Hennessy Catholic College helped to organise the morning and said the games had been a friendly gesture towards the Robina High team.
“We just felt really bad for them – they came all this way and now there’s no one here for them to play,” Mr Mitchell said.
“They’re just a lovely group of kids,” he said.
The Young Lions Soccer Club donated a pair of socks to each of the Robina High team.
The team, which consisted of 10 students accompanied by two teachers are on a nine-day trip and flew from the Gold Coast to Sydney to play in a futsal tournament before catching a train to Cootamundra and then a bus to Young.
Shortly after competing against the combined Young teams they left for Canberra where they will be given a tour of the AIS before heading back to the Gold Coast.
