A LADIES Oz Tag football competition is set to be run in conjunction with the 2008 Group Nine rugby league competition, following official in principal endorsement of the idea by the Groups executive committee.
Each side in the competition are now to nominate a team for the competition, and Group Nine president Neville Smith said the committee hopes to establish a working party with the help of Oz Tag officials to organise the running competition, set to commence on April 20.
Smith said the decision to run the competition was due to the success of Group 20 Oz Tag competition, and also an ongoing campaign to involve women in the winter football season.
Working party with Group Nine and Oz Tag committees to investigate whether each group can get a side to run in the competition, with a meeting to be held in Junee next Saturday.
“A lot of things need to be worked out, such as change room usage, insurance and cost,” Neville Smith said.
“For six years we’ve been trying to work out a way to get women involved in the competition,” Smith said.
“We tried to incorporate netball with the competition like AFL codes do, and we also tried touch but not everyone has touch sides,” he said.
Smith forecasts that it will be a competitive competition, given the Young Oz Tag sides is the was recently crowned as the NSW PCYC competition state champions and Wagga already is running a successful Oz Tag competition.
Local touch coach, Dave Walsh will be coaching the Young side and will be managed by Col Durham.
Walsh said this is good news after such a long campaign to get women involved.
“Young are in a good position as we already have an Oz Tag team which just recently won the NSW Oz Tag championship in Sydney,” Walsh said.
“But this will not necessarily be the team. A trial is going be held and all interested players will be invited to nominate then for the team.”
The trial will be held on a day/evening to be announced in a few weeks and will be held at the PCYC Stadium adjacent to Hall Bros Oval.
If there is enough interest, there will be a mini competition held during the week in Young during their winter months.
Already, Temora, Wagga Wagga Kangaroos and Tumut as well as Young have shown interest in nominating Oz Tag teams.
