HELEN Spencer has continued her domination of the Young Golf Club’s Ladies Championship with her 30th win over the weekend.
Spencer shot three rounds of 76, 80 and 79 to win the championship and now has the enviable record of 30 wins from 31 attempts.
She achieved her first win in the competition in 1979 as a 20 year-old and has won every year since, except 2005 when she finished second to Christobel Stolhand.
Spencer, who currently plays off a handicap of four, said winning the championship had not lost its appeal despite winning the event so many times.
“It’s still very exciting, it’s the most important event I play in all year,” Spencer said.
“The cup has a very special spot on the mantlepiece.
“To be club champion is very important and to have your name on the board, you’ve made history,” she said.
Spencer said her first win in the competition remains the highlight but this latest win was up there with it.
“The first one is always the best but this was one was nice, nice round figures,” she said.
Spencer began playing when she was 17 and said the secret to her success was lots of practice plus a little bit of talent.
“I’ve been very lucky to be able to spend a lot of time practising,” she said.
Spencer said she hoped to keep playing in the tournament in the future but said she may not be playing as much in the future.
“I’ve got a few niggles from my dedication to the game, but I would like to perhaps win another one or two” she said.
