THE new season for the Young harness racing club got off to an exciting start last Friday with the first of nine races keeping the photo finish operator busy in what was going to be the closest finish of the day.
The locally trained Tully Town was sent out a short priced favorite and gave his backers a great sight for most of the journey before first starter and the highly fancied Big Bad Brad arrived just in time to take home the money in a very close finish.
Trained at Coleambally by David Kennedy, the winner was bred by Norm Frankle and his wife who ironically bred the second horse, Tully Town.
Wagga trainer Paul Kahlefeldt put the writing on the wall when his New Zealand import ran a good second, coming from a long way back, the winner posting a creditable 2:02.7min mile rate on a track that had received good overnight rain.
The second of the day was a good result for the followers of the Paul Kahlafeldt stable when Lettuceparty took out the three-year-old event from the well supported Casino On Ice and the lightly raced Canberra performer Last Straw.
The three-year-old Jennas Beach Boy gelding scored his first win following a good second at Canberra last week on a heavy track and his performance on Friday suggests that he will be a horse to follow.
Local trainer Michael Hardy continued his good form when the Michael Day Jr. driven Codys Treasure returned to the winners circle in race three following an unsuccessful trip to Harold Park recently.
Sent out a short priced favorite, the four-year-old recorded his second race win from his short racing career.
Trainer Brenden Depaoli made the long trip from Yanco with We Love Lucy to claim second price whilst the consistent Cowra pacer Lombo La Freebi took the minor end of the prize with another gallant effort.
That man, Paul Kahlafeldt, came up trumps again when Never Walk Alone proved too strong for Ollytheorphantooth and Brazilian with the well backed Red Success who had no luck in running, finishing fourth.
Form guides were of little use when the $22 chance Nyleeta led throughout to take out race five.
Purchased at the Killarney sales by Mrs Janet Jones, the four-year-old was educated by leading, now retired trainer and Janet’s better half, Lyle Thomas who, after a number of starts, leased the Strong Life filly to Matt McCaffery who has done a great job to now see her win her third race.
The pole marker scored by a head in a nail biting finish from another local pacer in Say G’Day Lombo and Kenmore Lady, again a race that had the large crowd on their toes until the judge called a halt.
Race six gave Bathurst trainer and consistent supporter of the Young track Ian Mutton a well deserved win with the favorite Spooky Leigh who accounted for Beach Warrior and the lightly raced Low Altitude, the winner had too much in reserve scoring by a convincing margin.
Race seven was another blow out when Imalolatoo defeated Star Of Bert and Ritsma, a couple of the more fancied runners failing to perform to expectations.
Race eight resulted in a win for the David Druitt trained Barcelona Jack, again at long odds from Lasswho and Master Lover.
The Maorundah trainer continuing to have an excellent strike rate on this track.
The lucky last of the day was taken out by the well fancied Slick Bromac from Holmencontents and Franco Namesake.
Slick Bromac had previously ran two very good races at Tabcorp Park, Melton behind Rohan Home and Maffioso and looked a special in this final event.
The Young club race next on October 2.
