DIE HARD racing followers scrambled for the record books to try to find a meeting so dominated by the fairer sex, at Young on Friday afternoon.
Bathurst driver Emma Turnbull stole the show with four winners, while Kerryann Turner landed a winning double with three minor placings. Goulburn driver Amy Day kept the flag flying with two good placings and Jane Winnell finishing second on Whiskey Jasper in race seven. Up and coming Riverina driver Martelle Maquire finished just behind the place getters in the same race and local driver Katie Jenner produced Roxy Rama in race six to finish sixth.
The day of top class racing began with Michael Day Jr. taking the prize with the well supported Swift Stride in race one. After beginning well and leading at the bell the Courage Under Fire gelding was shaded by Reita Parker with Ivanka sitting in behind waiting to pounce in the straight. Day was able to maintain the lead throughout with a couple of slow quarters to draw away to score by seven and a half meters from Ivanka who tried hard with Bramansa who had sat in the outside line finishing third.
Race two gave Emma Turnbull the first of her four winners when she drove Studleigh Matilda for Browns Creek trainer Leigh Davis. Being second at the bell behind Beach Boy Rival, Emma sat quietly before making her move in the straight to head the pacemaker with Amy Day finishing third on Treuative, Amy rewarded for her patient drive. The margins of a neck by a neck were an indication of the closeness of the race, the three place getters running in the first three throughout.
In the third of the day, Emma repeated the dose when she came from fourth at the bell to land Alina Spirit in another driving finish to defeat Esters Light, Amy Day, with Tu Presto who had worked hard in running taking third prize. Also in this race was Wagga driver Alison Short who again showed maturity in her driving and finished midfield.
The ladies moved over in race four when Bradley Kelly drove Stellar Esprit to victory over Twenty Three Penny and Sign On Sally who put up a big show for Mark Hewitt and nearly got “The Bickies” at big odds. Again the photo finish was called upon to declare the placings.
Race five produced a run by a very good horse in Life Long Promise for the White family at Wagga. Driven by Kerryann Turner, the five year old gelding by OK Bye resumed since finishing unplaced at Wagga in July, 2010 and looked a treat in the warm up. On looks at that point he certainly seemed the bet of the day and he delivered by scoring by six and a half meters with a 1:59.7 mile rate thank you very much! Minor place getters Toothbrush and Noshuhare doing the chasing in a real good race.
In race six the well tried Tully Town Was sent out favourite with Michael Hardy in the gig the result was never in doubt. Starting from an awkward draw he produced a strong finish accounting for Bustling Benny and pacemaker, second favourite Go Lush. Emma Turnbull stepped up to the plate again in race seven with pole marker Three Sailors and again took the money in defeating Whiskey Jasper, Jane Winnell with Bemboka Ace in third place. The winner came from third at the bell, pacemaker Great Western Star fading into fourth placing.
With no respite from the heat, the winners and fast times continued when Artache, yes Emma Turnbull again, stormed home from midfield to defeat Queen Of Courage and Scooting Armbro. The mile rate of 1:57.9 was again a great result for the track curator and his team and again highlights the quality of the Young track.
The lucky last gave Kerryann Turner her second winner with Six Of The Best confirming his current good form following his second at Canberra last week. Bathurst trainer Bernie Hewitt gave the locally owned Narvik every chance sitting in behind the leader but the second place cheque would have to do whilst Hamilton Gypsy ran a nice race to finish third.
