Outsider interest is brewing

08 Feb, 2012 08:42 AM
The feature meeting for the Young Harness Racing Club for 2012, the Carnival of Cups is shaping up to be one of the best on record with trainers from throughout NSW making enquiries as to the stabling facilities available at the track.

President of the Young club, Mr Brian Ingram, revealed that following the running of the Canberra Cup last Sunday, the interest in the meeting has been incredible with numerous Sydney trainers indicating their intention to contest one of the richest cups on any country track in the state.

Canberra Cup winner Roman Stride was brilliant in his win over Garnett River and Rohan Home and in doing so left the Temora Cup winner Paleface Jasper and last year’s runner-up Min Min Lights amongst the also rans.

The Cordina Farms Pacing Cup will carry $40,000 in total prizemoney for C6 and better pacers to be run over the longer 2480 metres and is expected to include a strong representation from the Turnbull and Hewitt stables from Bathurst.

Last year’s winner, Royal Surprise driven by Amanda Turnbull made it win number 15 when the Brioso Hanover stallion stormed home to defeat Min Min Lights, Jim Douglass, by a head with Heza Buzzin, Michael Muscat close up third.

Goulburn trainers will again be well represented. Neil Day, Michael Day Sr. and David Hewitt have been regular supporters of the club for many years whilst our friends in the Riverina, Jackson Painting and Co will have a team ready for the big night.

The Riverina Oaks for the three-year-olds also carries additional prizemoney, last year’s winner Lively Moth travelled up from Kilmore to take the cash from the stablemate Awaywiththefaries, both trained by Tony Peacock.

Grenfell trainer Mark Hewitt was able to run third with the Life Sign filly Sign On Sally whilst Jason Gaffney was just behind the placegetters with Broken Promises.

The club will also conduct the David Hodges Memorial as part of the program and Bathurst trainer Bernie Hewitt will be looking to repeat the performance of last year when Francos Lancelot made it two wins in a row following a Canberra win the previous week.

Again the winning margin of a half head over the well fancied local pacer Amazing Spirit and Just A Blue Chip made for exciting racing.

A strong supporting programme is expected for the feature night, some entertainment for the children, food stalls and music will add to the carnival atmosphere.

With fine weather, a record crowd is expected at the Young paceway next Saturday night, February 18.
