Monteagle small schools champs

All 10 tennis courts at the Young Tennis Club were in full use which saw 40 students from Years 3 to 6 competing.

 There were 10 teams from seven small schools around the shire – Wombat, Monteagle, Maimuru, Bribbaree, Koorawatha, Murringo and Wallendbeen – battling it out for the trophy in eight doubles sets per match.

By the end of the day, the team with the highest overall point score was deemed the winner.

Monteagle team A came out on top with an overall score of 77.

Following not too far behind was Koorawatha Public on 68.

Almost in its 10th year, Monteagle Public School principal and championships organiser Monica Gordon said the day had been “fabulous” and the children were “having a great time”.

“It’s a social thing for them – they love it and they have great sportsmanship,” Ms Gordon said.

What added to the atmosphere of the event was that a lot of players put their hand up for the championships to have a go.

While some were enjoying the day out and making new friends, for others the competition proved a great self esteem and confidence booster.

One teacher said she had a student run up to her asking if her team won and upon finding out they had, wanted to get some more practice in before her next match.

Two of the competition’s first timers, Chloe West and Erica Weekely from Koorawatha said they had a great day, adding that they had won two matches that morning.

So what was Chloe and Erica’s favourite part of their first experience.

“Making friends,” they said.
