There are plans it’s not just going to be barbies and beers tomorrow as the town celebrates Australia Day – many are set to enjoy a full program of activities in the park.
In true-blue Aussie style, it’s an early start in the park kicking off with an 8am barbecue breakfast followed by a range of fun activities before official award ceremonies start at 10.30am.
It’s a not-to-be-missed event which includes Young Shire Band, Geoff the Chef Show for the children, bush poets, dancers and of course the all-popular lolly scramble later on.
Planet Ark and National Tree Day co-founder, influential environmentalist and 2010 Australian of the Year, Jon Dee, is Young’s official Australia Day ambassador and he will headline the celebrations tomorrow morning.
Following the morning of entertainment, the community is also invited to attend the Down to Earth Opera Australia Day Concert at the Young Town Hall on Sunday, January 27.
Renowned artists, musical director and concert pianist May Gavin, tenor Raymond Khong, baritone Ian Cousins and local Soprano Julie O’Connor will perform from 7pm.
Concert coordinators have decided to donate funds to local charity The Georgina Josephine Foundation, which will see the charity celebrate their first anniversary in February and thank the community for their support.
Tickets are on sale at M & M’s Music Studio for $40 each, (children free).
The village of Wombat has its own Australia Day celebrations with endurance athlete Greg Donovan the official ambassador.
A spectacular line-up of activities has been arranged at Wombat Sports Ground in Rose Street from 9.30am onwards including the hotly-contested tractor pull around the oval and the village street parade at 12 noon followed by the award presentations.
The community of Young and Harden are then invited to the Wombat Hotel where they will have light refreshments and cold drinks.
A reminder for those travelling far and wide that double demerit points have been in effect from midnight as police launch Operation Safe Return.
In the event of wet weather tomorrow the ceremony in Carrington Park will be moved to the Town Hall.
