Weather was great for mid-July and games were hard.
Results for the weekend:
Red Backs 7 (David Webster, Geoff Palmer, Peter Lister, Elliott Dodd 2 and Veronica Ward 2) def Penguins 1 (Bernie Ricketts).
With both teams playing short this week the score line did not reflect how the teams played.
Penguins were again under strength, with only nine players, with the likes of Scott Murray, David Coombes and Lauren Marchant absent. And with no goalie, they fought hard in the backs.
Red Backs backs were strong as ever and their forwards were just too strong and fast for the exhausted Penguins.
Red Backs scored five goals in the first half with Peter Lister starting the damage followed by Veronica Ward, Elliott Dodd, Veronica Ward again and Geoff Palmer right on half time.
Leigh Crowden played kicking back for Penguins was unable to stop Elliott Dodd and David Webster from scoring.
Penguins did hold the Red Backs to only two goals in the second half with Bernie Ricketts scoring their only goal. Peita Payne and Nick Ricketts played extremely well under the pressure.
Cougars 1 (Tim Baron) and Sports Power 1 (Rick Tubey) had a draw.
This was a tight game with Rick Tubey and Andrew Pratt looking dangerous throughout the whole match.
Rick Tubey scored in the 15th minute.
Chris Kenny was working overtime in the goal for Cougars to beat off these two players.
Tim Baron came to the rescue for the Cougars and to take some pressure off Chris in the goals by converting a goal off a short corner, and Nicole Dron and Sam Estelle were strong throughout the whole match.
Great to see both teams fielding a full side.
Blues 6 (Daniel Woods, Kelly Day, Angus Rudd 2 and Scott Druett 2) def Bears 1 (Nicole Holihan).
What a game.
Both teams had 11 players, both teams had a fun lovely game which was a nice change.
There was team work from the Blues for the first goal off a short corner.
Daniel Woods received at the top of the circle to offload to Scott Druett to cross to Angus Rudd for him to score.
Bears were unable to clear the ball from the short corner leaving Scott Druett the opportunity to take full advantage and score.
Daniel Woods again strong in midfield to have good lead work to the circle for a schmick pass to Brendan Whitechurch who saw only the backboard to score.
Tracey Clark, Bears goalie worked hard in defence with deflections going in every direction, and Kelly Day found form in the second half to hold possession, pass to Scott Druett who pushed to Brendan Whitechurch and Brendan heard Kelly Day yelling for the ball to give a nice cross for Kelly to score her first goal for the year.
Bears fought hard throughout the whole game with comedian Nicole Holihan keeping us all entertained.
Nicole was able to score her third goal for the season, but from the excitement you would of thought it was her first goal ever!
Kyle and Jeremy Martin were the standout for the Bears, especially in the midfield. Don’t underestimate the strength of the triple J’s in the forward line (Jodie, Jennifer and Janice) as they are a force of their own.
Overbelly’s 2 (Peter Cockburn and Michael Walsh) def Collegians 1 (Brad Ashton).
A very close game with plenty of passing and skills.
Javarn Hurcum once again being very instrumental in the goal scoring efforts, being closely guided by Michael Walsh. Collegains were first to score.
Greg Burns had a good run to beat a number of defenders to pass off to Brad Ashton for the first goal of the game.
There were no other goals scored in the first half. Plenty of battles between the left hand long armed Paul Gruber and Jack Stephenson. It did not stop there. Peter Cockburn even the score from a penalty corner to strike the ball well.
With the score now even and10 minutes to go, Michael Walsh hit a long ball to Javarn Hurcum who saw Michael running through to pass to him on the fly for Michael to score.
This being the final goal and resulting in a 2-1 win for Overbelly’s.
Lachlan Dodd played valiantly for Overbelly’s with Teresa Campbell playing fearlessly as always.
