A passerby phoned Young NSW Fire and Rescue when they saw flames erupting from the chimney.
At around 7.45 the brigade arrived on the scene, extinguishing the fire within 10 minutes and monitoring for a further 45.
No one was hurt in the fire, with the two occupants self evacuating when fire fighters arrived.
The damage was limited to inside the chimney and some water damage elsewhere in the property.
Young NSW Fire and Rescue deputy captain Ryan Terry said the old chimney caught fire due to a build up of soot and people should look for this over the winter months.
“Just keep an eye on fireplaces and make sure chimneys are kept clean,” he said
Deputy captain Terry said chimney fires were more of a problem in older houses where fire could spread onto the roof.
He said other things people should look out for over winter included taking precaution when microwaving wheat or rice filled heat bags, with one catching alight in Cootamundra recently, and making sure electric blankets were turned off after use.
