Bad weather for golf was the order of the week, with winter making a comeback, disrupting many of the competitions as a result. Many days this week were just not inviting at all for golf, however some hardy souls still managed to play on.

Tuesday’s veterans competition fell afoul of the weather with no players setting out on the course.
Wednesday was not much better however 29 keen golfers set out in the Pro’s Midweek Competition.
In spite of less than ideal conditions, there was still some very good scoring with Max Gilbert winning the day on 40 points on a countback from Mark Flynn also with 40 points.
Darryl Brown with 37 points and Terry Perrin with 36 points rounded out the minor places.
Balls went down to 29 points, and the ball draw was not claimed.
Remember that you must be in the clubhouse when the draw is made at presentation time to be able to claim the ball draw jackpot.
The Friday 9 hole competition was a washout also.
The showers cleared on Saturday, at least enough to encourage a fairly good field for the South West Par 3 Championship.
Our thanks to the major sponsors of the day, John Hobson Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, CGU Insurance, Richard Mellish Insurance Services, and the South West Slopes Credit Union for providing some excellent trophies.
Par 3 Golf is actually a harder form of the game for the low markers as the tees are often drawn further away from the greens than where they would normally drive their ball to. Also, there is no such thing as a putt for eagle as greens cannot be reached in under regulation, so any score around par is an outstanding achievement.
Congratulations to the winners with the Men’s Par 3 Champion for 2013 going to Grant Harding with an even par round of 54 off the stick from runner-up James French with 59.
The Ladies Par 3 title was won by Helen Spencer with a well compiled 59 off the stick from Gail Hanigan with 66.
B Grade scratch for men was taken out by Pud Smithers with 64 off the stick closely followed by Greg Nolan with 65.
In C Grade, Col Blizzard was the victor with 69 off the stick but only after a countback from the very unlucky Craig Watson who also shot 69 off the stick.
Craig also had the lowest nett score for all players with a 50 nett, however players are limited to one trophy each and the scratch runner-up took precedence.
Handicap winners in A Grade were Dean Schofield with 55, from John Hobson 57 and Andrew Miller also on 57 nett. In B Grade, John Connell won with 56, from Jarrod Harding 56 and John Rolfe 57 nett. The top three in C Grade were Peter Doherty 56, Matt Williams 56 and Paul Flynn 57.
Ladies handicap winners for the day were Debbie Slater, with the best score for ladies with 52 nett, closely followed by Ros Anderson with 53 and Michele Blizzard with 55 after a four way countback to decide third place.
As always, with the Par 3 Tournament, there was a nearest the pin on every hole, with the nearest the pin winners as follows:
1- Michele Blizzard, 2- Ian Tierney, 3- Greg Murray, 4- Kim Watson, 5- Brian Page, 6- Chad Challen, 7- Patrick Fitzgerald, 8- Alan Wilder, 9- Sandra Holmes, 10- Pud Smithers, 11- Mat McKnight, 12- Craig Watson, 13- Larraine Nicolls, 14- Kim Watson, 15- Greg Nolan, 16- Alan Wilder, 17- Bob Brown, 1nd 18- Michele Blizzard. There was no secret birdie or card draw winner .
Sunday was a medley Stableford ball sweepstake and the winner was Simon Snedden who shot two over par off the stick to record 42 points.
Simon did not get it all his own way though, as he only won on a countback from Graeme Langford who also had 42 points, closely pursued by Alan “Wally” Wilder with 40 points.
Wal had a score of one under par to compile his 40 points, and Chris Fraser impressed also with 39 points which would usually be enough to win on a Sunday.
ALL players are reminded again to take great care when driving carts as the course is very wet. So please ensure that there is a maximum of one cart for every two players in all groups at all times, and that carts are not driven inside the black lines around the greens.
This Saturday will be a single stableford with prizes sponsored by Hamblin’s Amcal Chemist and David Hamblin.
Sunday is the first day of spring and also Father’s Day, so for all keen golfers, there will be a single medley stableford with prizes appropriately sponsored by the father son pair of Ron Flynn and Mark Flynn.
Remember now to start organising your sides for the summer daylight saving competition starting in early October. We have revised the format again to encourage as many players as possible to have a go at mid week golf after work this daylight savings.
All golfers will be looking forward to some warmer days as we head into spring.
I hope to see you all soon up at the Golfie.
