Being selected for the metro side was his goal all along when he set off to Sydney at the beginning of the year, following his selection on the elite squad and moving to Newington College in Stanmore.
The former Young High school student personally delivered the good news to The Witness when he collected his Young Sports Advisory Committee Sportsperson of the Month award.
Ward was among only half the players from the elite squad selected for the metro team.
“It’s incredibly competitive,” mum Karen Ward said, “it’s not a given that just because he’s part of the elite team he would be selected for the metro state team.”
Karen said the coaches were “very impressed” with Ward’s progress and that they looked for players who had excelled.
Ward will now be off to the FFA National Youth Championships from September 29 to October 4.
Football NSW Institute will be sending a country and a metropolitan team.
It’s not the first time Ward will be competing at the national titles.
The teenager travelled to Coffs Harbour last year for the tournament as a member of the NSW country team, which saw his side win gold in the pool b competition.
“It’ll be pretty funny to play against my mates in the country team,” Ward laughed, thinking of this year’s titles.
The Young Sports Advisory Committee recognised Ward for his recent Australian representation in the 2013 Tokyo International Youth Football Under 14s Tournament.
He played for the Eastern Seaboard team from April 29-May6.
