Over 300 school children, teachers and community members converged on the park to join in the Aboriginal Cultural Day celebrations.
With the sun streaming down, locals enjoyed catching up over entertainment and lunch.
The Council’s Aboriginal Liaison Committee organised the day with the assistance of a number of partners.
Naomi Peters and Sam Lloyd from Young’s Community Hub were able to source grant funding through the Aboriginal Child, Youth and Family Engagement Grant, Colina Meadows from Campbell Page supplied the meat and the Local Aboriginal Land Council used grant funding from the 30 year celebration of Land Rights to help fund the event.
The event was opened by Young deputy mayor and Aboriginal Liaison Committee chairperson Ben Cooper who welcomed all the community to the event and thanked the small village schools for making the huge effort to come into the celebration.
CEO of the Local Aboriginal Lands Council Norma Freeman gave the official Welcome to Country.
Golden Guitar award-winning country music singer Col Hardy and Lucinda from Taronga Zoo had the audience engaged and interested as they sang, danced, played the didgeridoo and clapsticks and showcased snakes, lizards, frogs and an echidna who all starred in the dreamtime stories Col told.
Ben Cooper praised his committee for the work they had put into organising and running the event.
He said he was overwhelmed with the success of the day.
‘This was an excellent event that bought people from all sectors of the community together. I am so happy that the Aboriginal committee has been reinstated and I cannot praise the committee members enough for their hard work and energy.,” Ben said.
He wanted to say a huge thankyou to Will Dunn, Luke Doldissen, Kye Hutchinson, Nick Boland, Nathan Hislop, Jayke Hogan and Bailey Pope and Issac Northcott, Karen and Brendan Clarke who helped cook and distribute goods. It was also lovely to have community volunteers volunteer to help on the day. Thanks also to Mel Thomson, Kristen Clemisha and Liz Kidd who attended the day with their children and were happy to jump in and lend a hand.
