Young’s recent Aboriginal Cultural Day, was the backdrop to a recent interview with the local student about life in Young, education and Aboriginal culture.
What they discovered is that Gail Goolagong is focused toward future success, committed to achieving her HSC and very interested in continuing to learn more about her culture.
Gail said she enjoyed the recent Aboriginal Cultural Day and told us that ‘it was important for the whole community to get together and that it was great that the town was recognising Aboriginal culture’.
Gail was joined by her friends Darcy Debritt and Cassidy Steegh at the event.
Cassidy sang an impromptu song which was very well received by the audience!
Learning about her culture is very important to Gail and she said she was so lucky to have her nan Bella Charles, her pop Keith Freeman and Enid Clarke at school to help her learn more about her culture.
Gail was very happy with the cultural events she has the opportunity to attend and loved the ‘Lachlan Dreaming Canoe Trip’ which gave students the opportunity to canoe down the Lachlan River, learning about Aboriginal culture and visiting special sites.
Gail and her friends have volunteered to help with the next cultural day and they are planning to run games with the younger students to encourage positive social interaction between the different ages.
After completing school, Gail hopes to get the opportunity to become a hair and makeup beautician.
Her long-term goal is to attend university and specialise as a midwife.
It is always great to meet a local student who is proud, ambitious and positive.
Well done Gail!
