And it’s all coming from the last place anyone expected – a luncheon held in Sydney.
Though it’s not just any luncheon.
Every year during the Royal Easter Show, Jenny Dudley – wife of Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) president Glenn Dudley - invites a range of distinguished guests to lunch, and the funds raised go to a rural NSW town.
In past years efforts have hit the $25,000 mark and helped with construction of the Cancer Care room at Orange Base Hospital, rebuilding of the Bobadah Community Hall and donated to the girls group Back Track.
Among the guests at this year’s April 10 event, for instance, will be the Governor of NSW Marie Bashir.
Guest speaker is best-selling author of Baby Love and The Mighty Toddler and Women’s Weekly Australia’s Most Influential Women nominee - Robin Barker.
It was Robin who chose Young as the lucky town to receive the money raised at this year’s function.
Robin is a registered nurse, midwife and parent-craft nurse with more than 30 years of experience working with families and babies.
It seemed only fitting to her to look for something related to her background to donate such a large sum of money to.
Robin also happens to be a close friend of the Crichton family in Young and she wanted to help out when she was invited as guest speaker.
“Local midwife Tami Stuart told me our local hospital currently has only one labour bed which has been described as ‘a dinosaur’,” Pip Crichton said.
“Robin said she is very excited the money raised is going towards the purchase of a new labour ward bed,” she said.
Even the children from Young Public School are playing their part in the fundraiser.
They have created 150 beautiful, brightly coloured drawings depicting Young and what they love about their town.
The drawings have been laminated and will be used as placemats at the luncheon.
