David was described as a one in a million with a heart of gold, an amazing worker, an all round good guy and a legend. David was tragically killed in a freak accident late in 2008 after working his horses at the Young Showground.
Many trainers and drivers attended David’s funeral in Canberra wearing their racing silks, reportedly over 600 friends and family gathered for what reported as one of the biggest seen in Canberra for some time.
David’s wife, Sharon said at the time the Fire Brigade gave him a farewell befitting a commissioner or superintendent.
David was president of the Young club for over four years. Treasurer at the time, Greg Maxwell describes Dave as a real doer, an achiever. The old adage “If you want it doing, do it yourself” was certainly applicable to David’s get it done attitude.
During his time at the helm, David oversaw the replacement of the broadcast box, the re surfacing of the track, and even selling raffle tickets on a Friday night at the local pup.
Nothing was too much trouble for someone who had only been in Young a relatively short time. He brought leadership to the club, he was an achiever who was held in high esteem by the whole harness racing industry.
His greatest moments no doubt was when Gavro and Nickalong Adios won at Harold Park and when he sold Marcus Maibrace, a C3 class pacer to America.
His love of rugby league was also high on his list of achievements representing Western Division.
Also winning multiple premierships with Parkes and being captain coach of Peak Hill before moving on to Canberra taking up a position in the fire brigade.
The Young Harness Racing Club have perpetuated the memory of David Hodges in placing a plaque on the new winning post and also by conducting this annual event.
