Farrell also credits her move to Canberra as aiding her international renaissance and hopes it is the start of a steady stream of Southern Stars representatives from the ACT Meteors.

The 27-year-old looms as a vital component in Australia’s bid to win the Twenty20 World Cup in Bangladesh, starting on Sunday.

Farrell made a triumphant return to the national team during the Ashes series and carried that form into the recent tour of Sri Lanka.

It is a stark contrast to a few years ago when she went into premature retirement during a tour of the subcontinent.

Her love of the game had diminished, often training by herself as the only Australian representative in the Western Australian team.

''There was just something not right with me wanting to play the game any more and not enjoying it,'' Farrell said.

''I was in Perth and I was the only Aussie player in that set up at the time.

''You’re training by yourself, which can be lonely at times and trying to motivate yourself that way.''

Farrell’s cricket career can be split into two distinct zones.

The first spans from 2007 to 2011 when she played 23 one-day internationals and 23 T20 internationals for Australia.

The second is three years later, rewarded for a fantastic Women’s National Cricket League for the Meteors with selection for the Ashes.

After leaving the tour of India in 2011, Farrell relocated to Sydney to be closer to her family.

She slowly got back into the swing of things, charging towards her brother Ben in the nets in an ode to their backyard games growing up.

There is just one difference – her mother is now strictly a specialist fielder, not wanting to take on the full brunt of her daughter’s deliveries.

''My brother and I will go down to the nets and bowl and he’ll bat, so we’ll have a bit of banter there,'' Farrell said.

''That’s been fantastic to have a training partner in that sense as well.

''All my family has been very supportive, even my mum comes down.

''She throws the balls back. She used to face me, but not any more.''

Farrell joined the Meteors for the 2012-13 season, but a broken toe sustained tripping over her dog on the steps in her house limited her impact.

She returned fitter and hungry the following season, quickly making her mark to help lead the Meteors to the finals of the Twenty20 competition for the first time.

Farrell admits some people questioned her move to the Meteors and believed if she wanted to play for Australia again, her chances would be increased by playing for NSW.

''I was asked this year to go back to NSW. I guess in my head people were like, ‘You won’t make the Australian team in the ACT.' '' she said.

''You’re always going to have those people that are going to have those doubts.

''We’ve made the final and I think we’ve proven ourselves.

''I see my role as an Australian player is to bring back what we learn, and different values and cultures within that Australian team, and bounce some ideas and see if it fits in with the Meteors squad.

''We’ve got a lot of young, up and coming talent and I think those girls can be pushing for Aussie selection in the future if they’re given the right coaching and training facilities.

''Making the final definitely shows we’re a team to reckon with and hopefully there’s a lot more finals in the years to come.''

Her time out of the sport gave Farrell the opportunity to consider how to set herself up after cricket.

She has two years left on a bachelor of arts with the intention of becoming a primary school teacher.

One player who has watched Farrell’s return closely is fellow fast bowler Ellyse Perry.

The dual international was a teammate of Farrell’s in Sydney grade cricket and also with the NSW Breakers before Farrell moved to Perth.

''It’s been fantastic to have the opportunity to play with Fez over so many years, and it’s a huge boost for the Australian side,'' Perry said.

''She brings the new ball back in a considerable distance and is a point of difference not many other bowlers have.

''Anyone of Fez’s quality you want around Australian cricket.

''She made a decision [stepping away from the game] that was important for her and has probably increased her longevity in the game.

''She’s going to be very dangerous at the T20 World Cup and has the ability to rip apart a batting side in the first six overs with the new ball.''
