Mickle had predicted after Perth that she would break the record in Melbourne and on Saturday night she made good her promise. Mickle opened with 62.34m, only for Mitchell to overtake her with a 62.58m throw. Mickle then did what she has done best this past year – uncluttered her mind and just went ''boom''.

''It’s a relief but I don’t feel like it has happened yet … once I get home and see it written down it will sink in,'' Mickle said. ''I can’t believe it, it is the best thing ever.''

''I have been working really really hard but there is so much to go as well, which is so exciting because that is definitely not all I have. There is definitely more in the tank.

''I will get into a big block of training and absolutely let loose for the Commonwealth Games.''

Sally Pearson has now beaten Melissa Breen 30 times. She has lost to her once. The race she lost, Breen had to break the national title to win. Pearson is a competitive beast. Breen has the record but Pearson still has the edge, holding out Breen to win the 100m flat in 11.34 seconds, an A Qualifier for Glasgow.

Pearson earlier won the 100m hurdles in 12.83 seconds in her first hurdles competition since the world indoors.

"Other people's performances don't motivate me. She beat me in my season opener. I went down there [to Canberra] for that reason, I knew it was going to be a good run and I wasn't expecting to win,” Pearson said.

“Everyone knows I'm a competitor and as the season goes on that's what I've got over most of the other athletes – that I know how to race."

An impressive crowd of 5000 people turned out to Lakeside Stadium for the twilight event, the best crowd since athletics moved from Olympic Park. 

After what he amusingly described as his 19-month taper, long jumper Henry Frayne returned to competition with an impressive night in cool conditions to jump 8.1m and an A-qualifying distance for Glasgow.

Victorian teenage sensation Eleanor Patterson, who is still in her final year of high school, jumped 192cms and an A qualifying height.

Former world champion Dani Samuels felt she had returned to the sort of form that saw her win the world crown in Berlin in 2009. In the past fortnight she has recorded two throws over 65 metres and on Saturday night she threw another to 63.89m, which not only confirmed her consistency but was still 4.5 metres further than any other Commonwealth athlete threw last year.

 "That (63.89) was a pretty good throw. That should get me into a final come a world championships or an Olympics,'' Samuels said.

"This is the most consistent I've been. I've only thrown 65 a handful of times and the last two have been in the last couple of weeks."

Showman American world champion sprint hurdler David Oliver cantered through the 100m hurdles to win in a very casual 13.57 seconds. He said afterwards he did not hear the start gun and so broke from the blocks expecting to be called back.

American 400m world champion Lashawn Merritt cantered home in 46.32 seconds.
