The Brumbies face another selection headache before their clash against the Melbourne Rebels on Friday night, with Butler needing to progress through concussion tests and Lealiifano and Tevita Kuridrani available to play.

The Brumbies are aiming for a club-record equalling winning streak of five games – a feat achieved only twice in 2000 and 2002 in their Super Rugby history.

Canberra first grade best and fairest winner and Tuggeranong captain Tim Cree is the shock contender for a spot on the Brumbies' bench if Butler fails his tests, with under-20s star Tom Staniforth also in contention.

Kuridrani is in a battle with Andrew Smith for the No.13 jersey after he went back to Fiji last week for a family funeral while Lealiifano is set to make his comeback on the bench after ankle surgery.

Butler needs to prove he is no longer troubled by concussion symptoms and passed his test on Tuesday with several more assessments to follow before the game against the Rebels.

The Brumbies recruited Cree to training on Tuesday while Staniforth will play for the Combined States under-20s team against Tonga at the national championships on Wednesday night.

The new National Rugby Championship, which starts in August, is aimed at bridging the gap between club rugby and Super Rugby and the Brumbies are already investing in Canberra talent.

Cree has been a stand out player in the John I Dent Cup, leading Tuggeranong to a hat-trick of premierships and pushing his case for Super Rugby selection.

"We've shown great resolve over these last four rounds to fight back to some victories in close games," Larkham said.

"We're still waiting for [winger] Henry Speight to come back and we've got a number of injuries in the forwards.

"We've probably got too many guys to fit into the back line, there will be a few selection headaches over the next month. Tevita only got back on [Monday night] from Fiji so we have to see how he pulls up and every game Andrew Smith plays is at a high standard."

Wallabies coaches Ewen McKenzie, Jim McKay and Andrew Blades were in Canberra on Tuesday to cast their eye over the Brumbies' development.

Kuridrani and Smith have been battling for the Brumbies' outside-centre spot with both getting chances to impress in the starting XV.

Wallabies centre Kuridrani's dash back to Fiji gave Smith a chance to start against the Cape Town Stormers last weekend.

But while Kuridrani is on track to reclaim the starting spot, Smith said he was happy to bide his time.

"It's always healthy for a team, you want competition for spots and it makes you train harder," Smith said.

"I just have to play whatever role I can, if that's off the bench then so be it. If I'm starting that's great."

Coach Stephen Larkham has to decide whether to stick with winning combinations or inject new blood.

Fly-half Matt Toomua and inside-centre Pat McCabe have played every game this season, winning four in a row, and their combination is likely to keep Lealiifano on the bench.
