Following a fatal crash this morning, totalling five fatal crashes in the past seven days, two involving riders, police are urging all motorists to use caution in the conditions.
About 7am (Thursday 27 March 2014), police attached to Blacktown Local Area Command were called to the M4 Motorway, near Reservoir Road, after a motorbike and truck collided at the location.
The rider, a 34-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics, before being taken to Westmead Hospital, where he later died.
The truck driver, who was not injured, was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, said motorists need to be vigilant and drive to the conditions.
“Already today we have seen a fatal crash and a number of serious incidents on our roads in the wet conditions.
“Losing your life is a high price to pay for frustration in traffic, speeding to get to a destination, or taking risks in the wet weather.
“Drivers should ensure they remain patient, slow down, and provide plenty of room to other motorists on slippery roads.
“Wet weather can result in poor visibility, impacts the ability of a car or bike to stop suddenly, and is a contributing factor in a number of serious crashes.
“With two riders killed in motorcycle crashes in the past seven days, riders are also urged to ensure they ride safely and to the road conditions,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Smith said.
There have been 86 deaths on our roads this year, up from 72 at the same time last year.
