Act of bravery: Young highway patrolman Senior Constable Mathew Dreverman is being honoured alongside five of his NSW Police colleagues in receiving a national award for bravery for his endeavours amid the Black Christmas bushfires which burnt for almost three weeks from 25 December, 2001.
Murringo students get connected: Murringo Public School students are getting connected with five new iPads following a $1200 grant from Telstra’s Kids Fund. These are the words of 19-year-old Rachael Berry who will make good of a simple act in April when she will shave her head in front of the town to raise funds for a worthy cause.
Local sprintcar driver achieves World Series goals: After venturing out on the road for the first time as a contracted World Series Sprintcars (WSS) driver, Jackson Delamont can hold his head high after accomplishing what he set out to do. That is to finish inside the top 10 in the overall World Series championship.
Fire blamed on electrical fault: Emergency services crews and Essential Energy were called to a fire that broke out in the spray booth of a local smash repair business at around 8.30am Monday morning. The fire – thought to have started because of an electrical fault in the motor of the booth – resulted in thick smoke filling the workshop and creating a haze down the western end of Boorowa Street.
Counterfeit $50 notes circulating in Young: Multiple businesses in Young found themselves shortchanged over the past few days as several counterfeit $50 notes hit the town.
Man goes missing: An increased police presence was visible in Stockinbingal on Sunday as emergency crews searched for a missing man.
Faster testing for ED patients: Young Hospital has introduced a new point of care testing program that will give ED patients faster access to pathology results and improve overall care. Pictured is registered nurse Vicky Coddington who has been recently trained to use the new equipment at Young Hospital ED.
Stoddard plays in the UK: It was a very exciting start to the year for one of Young’s rising soccer stars Eden Stoddard who spent January representing Australia in the United Kingdom and scoring her first goal for Australia.
Delight at Relay for Life: Organisers of this weekend’s Relay for Life to be held rain, sun, snow or shine at Cranfield Oval are overjoyed at the response from the local community to this year’s event. The 24 hour walk, run or skipathon kicks off at 10am tomorrow with 291 participants already having raised more than $27,000 for the Cancer Council.
Edwina’s fantastic feat: YOUNG farmer Edwina Beveridge was honoured for her pioneering efforts in agriculture at Sydney’s Parliament House on Wednesday where she was named runner-up in the State Rural Woman of the Year awards. Counterfeit money operation shut down by police: Within a matter of days Young detectives worked fast to shut down a counterfeit money operation operating in Young and surrounding towns.
Rewarded for years of service: Michael Cummings was yesterday named this year’s male winner of Senior of the Year. He is pictured receiving his award from Mayor Stuart Freudenstein.
Hobson takes on nationals: In 13 days Young’s Edwina Hobson will head to Bendigo, Victoria where she will take part in the 2014 School Sport Australia Boys and Girls Triathlon Championship.
Young netball carnival great success: The Young and District Netball Association hosted their all age carnival on the weekend at the PCYC premises in Lachlan Street. The day was a great success with teams travelling from Yass, Wagga, Cowra, Forbes, Tumut and Barellan, just to name a few.
