Motorcyclist killed: A motorcyclist died after a crash involving two bikes and a truck on the Olympic Highway near the Bendick Murrell turnoff, about 25km north-east of Young at 10.15am on Friday, March 28 morning.
Drug crop seized in Young: Local police last week seized a backyard cannabis plantation in Young of 26 cannabis plants ranging from 30 centiemtres to one metre in height with an estimated street value of $26,000.
Gumtree meeting for rural fire service: Young RFS volunteers had a chance to discuss their views and thoughts on the zone’s operation last Wednesday, when they met for a “gumtree meeting”, at Young RFS Headquarters in Rockdale Road.
Students celebrate Harmony Day: As the town celebrated Harmony Day on March 21, hundreds of students, teachers and parents gathered under the covered area in the school grounds of Young Public School for a special assembly.
Ward scoots to Italy: It’s only been four weeks since Young soccer player Malcolm Ward joined the Under 17s Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport and already he’s off on an 18-day tour of Italy. He is due to return home to Australia on April 8.
Cycling in the name of charity: Around 50 cyclists rolled through town last week all in the name of charity. Up to 43 cyclists in the Mill to Mill Charity Bike Ride arrived in Young on Wednesday with seven more pedalling into town on Thursday, this time fundraising for the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Helicopter (pictured above). Among these cyclists included Snowy Hydro SouthCare CEO and former Australian international rugby union representative Owen Finegan (far right).
Autumn rain brings farmers relief: It’s been the best start to autumn for farmers in the region for close to 40 years. So when nature's tap turned on and Monteagle farmer John Fowler's farm received around 70 millimeters of rain in the last week of March, his relief, like many other farmers in the district, was understandable.
Organisers anticipate relay to hit $50,000 total: This year’s Relay for Life organisers are anticipating reaching $50,000 based on what was generated on the weekend. The day attracted 25 teams and 458 participants.
Hennessy’s mission to build two houses: Students from Hennessy Catholic College have teamed up with IGA stores around the region to kick off their fundraising for a social justice tour of Cambodia in July. There will be 33 students travelling to Cambodia to build housing for the underprivileged in a village near Siem Reap.
Shaun to shear on Today show: Young shearer from Australian Wool Innovations Shaun Wilson (right) performed a shearing demonstration yesterday for Southern Cross Retirement Village residents, such as retired shearer Les Murray (left), ahead of his appearance on the Today show on Thursday morning.
Young’s Gold Tiara trifecta: In a boost for local standard-bred breeders and owners, the first of the feature races at Bathurst last Saturday night resulted in a local quinella for participants Jackie Gibson and Glenn Wilmot. Cross country contest: IN TRUE community spirit, Young North Public School invited their neighbouring school to a combined cross country run on Tuesday after St Mary’s Primary School’s event was washed out last week. A very happy Liam Stuart, from St Mary’s, was proud to be the first boy in the 11 years to cross the line.
The year that was for Young’s Little As: Young and District Little Athletics presentation was held last Wednesday night in the Hall Brothers Oval clubhouse which saw athletes recognised for their hard work this season. Young’s starring role: Well known journalist and author Peter FitzSimons was filming in town this week as part of a three part series called The Great Australian Race Riot to air on SBS early next year, which will feature the Lambing Flat Riots, along with other race riots from 1846 to present day.
Gusollios takes runner-up: Gusollios Hair and Spa in Young is officially deemed one of the best two salon designs in the country. This prestigious accolade comes after the 2014 Australian Hair Fashion Awards at Sydney’s social hotspot, the ivy on Monday night, in which the local salon was one of four finalists in the best salon design category.
Nominations sought for business awards: Young District Chamber of Commerce Business Awards spokesperson Dean Kinlyside is encouraging local businesses to enter the 2014 Business Awards, to be held for the first time since 2011 on June 20.
League legend in town: Allan “Alfie” Langer - an Australian former multi-award winning rugby league footballer of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, one of the finest half backs of his era, and the current assistant coach of the Brisbane Broncos – will head to Young tomorrow for the Young Cherrypickers’ annual major fundraiser night.
Catch me if you can! Young Public School was the third primary school this week to hold their cross country event at the Young Golf Course. These two youngsters from Year 3, Hudson Hargraves and Seth Dawes, had fun trying to outrun one another yesterday.
