Howard Hawks' supremely seductive 1944 knock-off of Casablanca (see below) relegates plot to the background while making the most of the hard-boiled banter between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, who became a real-life item during the shoot. Piano man Hoagy Carmichael shows up for a couple of jazz numbers and Walter Brennan proves himself the greatest of comic sidekicks.

2. THE CIRCUS (68 minutes) G

The Little Tramp stumbles into the big top in one of Charlie Chaplin's lesser-known comic masterpieces, made in 1928 at the tail-end of the silent era. Fun for all ages, it's also a quasi-autobiographical essay on the nature of showbusiness, demonstrating that Chaplin was already thinking about his art in a very sophisticated way. 3. REAR WINDOW (112 minutes) PG

Stuck in his apartment with a broken leg, a photographer (James Stewart) starts spying on his neighbours through a window he treats as a private cinema screen. Soon he finds himself investigating a possible murder, with the help of his very active girlfriend (Grace Kelly). Witty, glamorous, suspenseful and disquieting, this is one of the essential Hitchcock classics.

4. MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO (86 minutes) G

While their mother is in hospital, two little girls distract themselves by exploring the countryside around their new home and finding some magical friends. Hayao Miyazaki's beautifully simple 1988 animated fantasy combines realistic observation with just a touch of the bizarre; like any genuine children's classic, it speaks to viewers of every age.

5. THE WIZARD OF OZ (98 minutes) G

What needs to be said? Judy Garland sings Over the Rainbow, Bert Lahr works himself into a tiz as the Cowardly Lion, and everyone is off to see the Wizard, striding down the Yellow Brick Road in glorious Technicolor. Every generation deserves to see this on the big screen.

6. CASABLANCA (98 minutes) PG

Michael Curtiz's legendary wartime melodrama, with Humphrey Bogart as a cynical nightclub owner in occupied Morocco, Ingrid Bergman as the old flame who walks back into his life, and a host of great European character actors in supporting roles. Even first-time viewers may feel a pang of nostalgia when Dooley Wilson sings As Time Goes By.

7. THE LUSTY MEN (113 minutes) Unrated 15+

Nicholas Ray's 1952 drama stars Robert Mitchum as a worn-out rodeo rider, Arthur Kennedy as his ambitious protege, and Susan Hayward as the protege's wife, whose yearning for respectability is seen as a passion as valid as any other. Photographed by Lee Garmes in deliberately unglamorous black and white, it's an outstanding example of Ray's bleak, ambivalent romanticism.

8. BARRY MCKENZIE HOLDS HIS OWN (95 minutes) M

Brilliantly dumb gross-out comedies, the Barry McKenzie films were ahead of their time and funnier than almost all Australian cinema made since. This 1974 adventure pits the beer-guzzling, perpetually virginal hero (Barry Crocker) against the sinister Count Plasma (Donald Pleasance). Series mastermind Barry Humphries is in fine form as Aunt Edna, and there's a memorable cameo from Gough Whitlam.

9. HOME FROM HOME - CHRONICLE OF A VISION (230 minutes) MA

Edgar Reitz's prequel to his epic Heimat saga shows the village of Schabbach going through lean times in the mid-19th century, as the precocious hero (Jan Dieter Schneider) dreams of leaving for South America. Reitz's storytelling is in some ways old-fashioned, but touches of artifice - such as the mingling of colour and black-and-white - undercut the seemingly straightforward realism.

10. THE LEGO MOVIE (101 minutes) PG

Directed by the team who gave us Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, this computer-animated comedy set in a world of LEGO figurines ranks as the most intellectual toy commercial since Speed Racer. The parodic plot centres on a boring construction worker (voiced by Chris Pratt) hailed as the hero destined to overthrow the tyrannical Lord Business (Will Ferrell).
