Doug Jones is just the sort of person the Abbott government will be thinking of when it starts promoting its plans for a second Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek.

"To preserve our future we really need it," said Mr Jones, the manager of the Hubertus Country Club at Luddenham, less than a five-minute drive from the potential airport site at Badgerys Creek.

"We need the population to come around here to sustain our future," said Mr Jones, whose club could do with a boost to its 700 members, despite the generous chicken schnitzels served at its German restaurant and indoor and outdoor gun ranges.

"If you've got jobs in that community, it's a lot better, it takes people off the roads."

In cheering on a Badgerys Creek airport based on its potential economic boost, Mr Jones is reflecting an argument that has become increasingly popular in western Sydney in the past five years.

He says the airport will trigger a wave of new development around Sydney's south-west.

"It gives us an opportunity to venture into other things, like a motel conference centre ... like what the [Penrith] Panthers [Leagues Club] have done."

Christopher Brown, an infrastructure lobbyist who sat on the steering committee of a joint state and federal government inquiry into another Sydney airport, said western Sydney required an airport to become the serious economy it needed to be.

"This shows the changing aspirations with western Sydney," Mr Brown said. "The community now are calling for the airport rather than opposing it as they were 15 years ago.

"Western Sydney is sick of being left off the economic map," he said.

But the boosters do not have a monopoly of views on the issue of a second airport for Sydney, a problem federal governments have failed to deal with successfully for at least 50 years.

With the Abbott government expected to approve Badgerys Creek as the location of another airport site on Tuesday, the forces opposed to an airport have needed little time to register their concern.

Stephen Bali, a Blacktown City councillor and secretary of an anti-Badgerys Creek lobby group, said the airport would be an "economic nightmare" and would exacerbate the health problems of western Sydney residents.

Ed Husic, the Labor MP for the nearby seat of Chifley, has been a prominent voice opposed to another airport in Sydney's west. He has described the economic arguments in favour of a Badgerys Creek airport as holding western Sydney to ransom.

To build an airport at Badgerys Creek, where the federal government owns 1700 hectares of land that it bought in the late 1980s, hundreds of people will need to be moved out of their homes.

Kim Jelfs and Lesley Redshaw, who live near each other in government-owned houses on Badgerys Creek Road, are two of the residents who will have to move.

Ms Jelfs moved to Badgerys Creek 24 years ago with her two young children. She had previously lived in Mascot, and thinks the residents of western Sydney do not know what they are in for.

"I think the general public really don't have any idea about the noise they are going to have to put up with," she said.

"And also the fog here is horrendous," she said. "On a good foggy day from my back kitchen window you can't see that [the next house] until mid-morning ... I don't know how it is going to work."

Ms Jelfs, who works part time but spent years in cancer treatment, does not know what she will do when she is forced to move.

"This was my family home for our children, my daughter was one and my son was two when we moved here. This was our home, this was our life."
