The workshop – a free ‘trade readiness’ course on light vehicles funded by the NSW Government – was especially designed for high school students in Years 9 to 12 who had an interest to pursue a career in the automotive industry.
TAFE NSW Riverina Institute Young campus launched the course last Monday, April 7, with its first workshop attracting 10 participants from Years 9 and 10.
From 8.30am to 5pm over five days, six students from Young High, two from Cootamundra High School and one each from Harden and West Wyalong pulled engines apart, reassembled them, serviced cars, changed and balanced tyres, and learnt everything else in between.
Students were also taken on an excursion to a local business and given an ‘exit report’ detailing their suitability for the industry – a valuable piece of paper no doubt when they seek employment.
“It was very hands-on… I absolutely loved it,” Year 10 Young High student Bronson Piercy said.
Fellow Year 10 classmate Riley Edgerton enjoyed every minute of the course, saying it was the best thing he’d ever experienced in automotive studies.
Course trainer and coordinator Bruce Walker was thrilled with the response from his students, praising their enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
